Fight for Food

Project Description - Fight for Food is a collaborative effort between The Mother Tree, Rada Studios, and Microshamba Food Forest, focusing on Kenya's food production challenges through six documentary films, farm installations, and impact initiatives. These films address topics like restrictive seed sharing laws, toxic agrichemicals, multinational land encroachment, water reserve issues, and climate change impacts.
Statement from Project Lead (2023) - We have reached a difficult decision to withdraw from the program. Our primary concern lies in the mandatory association with the British Council, as stipulated by policies that require us to feature the British Council's logo on all our marketing materials and the exhibition website, as well as tag the British Council in our social media posts. The core of our exhibition delves into the stories of indigenous Kenyan cultures, often portraying historical entities like the Crown, the UK Government and its colonial policies as the antagonistic forces against which indigenous wisdom and practices had to prevail. In this context, prominently featuring the British Council in our project communications is not only uncomfortable but deeply contradictory to the narratives we aim to share with our audiences. Given these circumstances, we feel that continuing our association with the British Council would compromise the integrity and purpose of the work, which is rooted in advocating for indigenous Kenyan culture and heritage. We remain committed to the causes of indigenous culture and heritage and are open to future collaborations that align with our values.
Statement from Braid Fund Team - In cultural heritage work, we are faced with difficult decisions regarding cultural knowledge and protection, funding, communications, legacy and justice given the history of East Africa, the source of most of the sector's funding and how often the work rubs up against historical injustices. We all make different choices in these matters. The work Rada is doing is both critical to Kenyan cultural preservation, and to food sovereignty and security as part of the climate justice fight globally. We are happy that Rada has continued working on this project and we support them and their decision. We hope that more open discussions can take place regarding these tough decisions, and we look forward to being part of conversation.
