Raiders of the Lost Act: Art and Theatre Mentorship Program

Community theatre in Uganda is waning in the face of social media and film.  Our program worked to bridge the interest of young people to share their stories and creativity quickly and with technology with instruction in and performances of live community theatre.  We transformed the Wava Nursery School into an arts apprenticeship and community theatre centre in Mugongo-Kyengera where we’ve been creating films, tik tok shorts and sharing them, along with live performances of dramas, comedies and music to live audiences.  With this work, we are not only building the capacity of young people with skills needed within the creative sector and in creative businesses, but we are building a library and archive of local stories by local young people.

“There is that untold act that needs to be discovered and staged to bring back the audiences. So ours remains a quest to for this act. We intend to stay on our feet until we discover it and bring back the crowds that enjoyed theatre and the related crafts. In the process, we shall have converted young people into the reality of using the arts to discover themselves and their own acts.” - Philip Luswata
