The project bridged the wisdom of Taarab musicians with the innovation of contemporary African and urban youth dance. Taarab, a traditional music form with roots dating back to the late 19th century, has seen declining interest among younger generations who favour modern music and dance styles. To preserve this cultural heritage and give contemporary Tanzanian art forms a unique identity, the project combined Taarab music with trendy urban contemporary dance for several pieces including the story of Litti Kidanka, a ruler who used bees to protect her land from the colonial forces. This contemporary dance piece includes women’s power, weaponised bees, treachery and fatal seduction and one woman's fight to keep her land in the hands of her people. Performed at the end of 2023, these works continue to reverberate across the continent and will continue to be performed in 2024 and beyond.
