PROJECT

Cultural Modernity and Its Influence on Cultural Heritage Protection

This collaborative project at Kiggundu Art Studio in Ndejje, Kampala, dove into the concept of cultural modernity and its impact on cultural heritage and vice versa, using art forms such as fabric stories, digital art, podcasting, and painting. With a focus on the Karamoja region of northern Uganda, a historically pastoralist and traditional community.  The project worked to dispel the notion that culture and tradition are at odds with modernity. Instead, we sought to demonstrate how modern practices can actually promote and preserve our cultural heritage and that we have a lot to learn from our heritage. The project involved three main artists, representatives from Karamoja, and a series of workshops and discussions with a wider community, ultimately leading to an exhibition of our explorations.
