Constipation

About the Illness

Constipation occurs when bowel movements become difficult or less frequent.
It is a common problem for many people, usually caused by not drinking enough liquid or eating enough fibre. The best way to deal with constipation is by making changes to lifestyle and diet rather than using laxatives which are no help in promoting active digestion.

Common Symptoms

Hard, compacted stools that are difficult or painful to pass; no bowel movement in 3 days for adults or 4 days for children.

Children’s Issues

Children should be de-wormed every 3 months to prevent constipation.

Important Information

Seek professional help if:

  • Your constipation is accompanied by a fever or lower abdominal pain, and your stools are thin or loose.
  •

  • You have blood in your stools.
  •

  • You have been constipated for 2 weeks.
  •

Help your stomach digest its food by drinking one of these digestive teas during or after meals:

Stinging Nettle Infusion good for all
