Eye Infection

About the Illness

The lining of the eyeball or eyelid becomes inflamed because of bacteria, virus or allergic reactions.

Common Symptoms

Burning, itchy eyes with heavy, sticky discharge are signs of bacterial conjunctivitis, which is very contagious; tears, swollen lymph node and a light discharge of mucus from one eye are signs of viral conjunctivitis; red, itchy eyes, and tears combined with an itchy, runny nose may indicate allergic conjunctivitis.

Children’s Issues

Children with eye infections will usually run a fever, cry a lot, become easily bored and can be unusually quiet.

Important Information

If infection does not clear after 3 days of treatment, seek professional advice.

Herbal Therapy

First, clean the eyes and remove pus or discharge with one of the following:

Mild Salt Solution good for all

Dissolve 1/4 tsp salt in glass water.
Use the solution to clean the eye.

Neem Infusion good for all

Prepare an infusion of neem leaves.
When it is lukewarm use the solution to bathe the eye.

After cleaning the eye, apply one of the following remedies to help clear the infection:

Mnavu good for all

Crush leaves and squeeze 1 drop in each eye 3x daily for 3 days.

Black Jack Juice good for all

Crush leaves and squeeze 1 drop in each eye 3x daily for 3 days.

Leonotis nepetifolia good for all

Body Work and General Advice

It is very important to maintain good hygiene to stop the spread of infection from one eye to another or from one person to another.
Before you treat someone’s eyes you must:

a)   Wash the patient’s face.

b)   Wash your hands before and after treatment.

c)   Use a clean, sterile cloth.

  • Wash your hands often and thoroughly, especially after touching the infected eye.

  • Keep hands away from the infected eye.

  • Do not share face towels with other people.

  • Do not allow a child with “pink eye” to play or sleep with other children.
