Gonorrhea

About the Illness

Gonorrhoea is spread through sexual contact. Men usually display the first symptoms between 2-5 days after being infected (but it can be up to 3 weeks before symptoms appear). Women seldom show symptoms until at least 7-14 days after infection, and it can take weeks or months before they do. A person who does not show any signs can still pass on the disease to someone else, starting a few days after becoming infected. It is very important to treat this disease properly as it will re-occur if not properly managed. If you have a partner, both of you must be treated, during which time neither of you should have sex.

Common Symptoms

Men: Pain or difficulty in urinating; pus discharge from the penis; sometimes painful swelling of the testicles.
Women: Often there are no symptoms to start with; pain or difficulty in urinating; smelly, yellow discharge; pain in lower abdomen; severe lower backache.
