Weight Loss

About the Illness

Weight loss occurs when the body is using up more energy than it is absorbing from food.
Weight loss, or wasting, is one of the most common symptoms of HIV infection and can occur at any stage.
It needs to be taken seriously because unintentional weight loss can be a sign of an active HIV-related infection or other diseases. If you are HIV+ you need more energy and nutrients than people who are not infected, and so are more susceptible to weight loss. This in turn makes it harder to recover fully from an illness.
When HIV+ people lose weight, they tend to lose muscle rather than fat, and muscle is more difficult to regain than fat. For this reason, if you are HIV+, you MUST monitor your weight and make sure you take steps to maintain or increase your weight as necessary.
