About the Illness

Sore throat is one of the most common health complaints and generally goes away without treatment. 
A sore throat that begins suddenly and is accompanied by a high fever but no cold symptoms could be
"Strep throat" which is a common infection in children and adolescents that is caused by a streptococcal
bacteria and which will need to be treated.

Common Symptoms

Burning sensation or scratchiness in the back of throat; pain, especially when swallowing; tenderness of the neck; may also be accompanied by sneezing & coughing, hoarseness, runny nose, mild fever or general fatigue.
"Strep throat": high fever; back of mouth and tonsils become very red; lymph nodes under the jaw or in the neck become swollen and tender.

Children's Issues

Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to Strep throat.
If you suspect your child has it, seek professional help immediately.

Herbal Therapy

First, keep your throat clean by using one of the following gargles to kill the germs:
Vinegar & Garlic 1 glass water, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar and 1 clove garlic. Blend till smooth.
Gargle half and spit out. Swallow the other half.                  
Salt Solution Add 2 tsp salt to hot water. Gargle.     

  • This is a medicinal preparation for washing and treating the mouth and throat. It should not be swallowed unless the prescription advises so.  
  • Keep home-made gargles for 1 day only.

Secondly, soothe your throat with one of these remedies:
Lemon & Honey Mix the juice of a lemon with honey. Take a large spoonful as necessary.

Good for:Kids
Ginger, Garlic, Lemon & Honey Crush ginger and garlic then add them to boiling water and drink.

  • Boil water and pour over herbs.  
  • Leave for 5-10 minutes.  
  • Filter through a clean cloth and use within 1 day.

Good for:All
Spiced Tea Ginger, black peppercorn, cloves and cinnamon in tea. Drink as often as you like.

This is a good method for extracting substances from thick leaves, roots or bark.  
  • Boil 1 handful of plant material together with 1 ltr of water for about 20 minutes.  
  • Try to use a clay pot or stainless steel saucepan. Do NOT use aluminium saucepans as they can react adversely with the medicine.
  • Prepare a fresh decoction every day.  
  • If you need to sweeten the decoction, use honey instead of sugar because honey has more medicinal value than sugar.

Thirdly, fight the infection. Try one of these:
Toddalia asiatica Root Chew the root then swallow.

Zanthoxylum macrophylla Bark Chew the bark then swallow.

Acacia xanthophloea Inner Bark Chew the inner bark then swallow.

Food and Nutrition Advice

  • Drink plenty of liquids, especially water.
  • Take soft/liquid foods e.g. soup.
  • Avoid dry food.
  • Avoid cold and sweet/sugary things. If you do take sweet or oily foods, follow them with a drink of hot water.
  • Avoid cold drinks and alcohol.

Body Work and General Advice

  • Relieve the pain by making a hot compress. Do this by taking a hot, damp cloth and wrapping it around the throat and ear area.
  • Avoid shouting.
  • Get plenty of rest.
