About the Illness

Oral thrush is caused by an overgrowth of yeast and the fungus Candida albicans in the digestive system.  It is a common problem for people who are HIV+.
If you do not treat the infection straight away it can lead to difficulty eating, which in turn will make you sicker, weaker and unable to regain your health and weight.

Common Symptoms

White patches in the mouth often surrounding an area of inflammation, generally inside the cheeks, on the gums or tongue; small, painful blisters in the mouth; wounds on the gums; pain in the mouth; eating and chewing food  (especially if hot, spicy and salty) is painful as is cleaning the mouth.

Children's Issues

Oral thrush is a common problem amongst newborn babies and HIV+ children.
The following symptoms are strong signs that your child may be HIV+ :
Recurring oral thrush, thrush lasting more than 30 days or thrush infection that occurs even if the child has not been taking antibiotics.
Other symptoms in children include disinterest in feeding, crying while feeding, vomiting, irritability, stomach ache and loose yellowish/greenish diarrhoea with mucus.
Reassure and comfort your child as much as possible because   a sore mouth can be very distressing.

Important Information

Take your child to the clinic if she is refusing to take liquids because the mouth is too sore.

Banana Ash Apply banana ash to the mouth with a clean finger or soft cloth 3x daily for as long as necessary.

Ash

The ash of different plants is used for many different medical applications.
Follow these instructions for preparing each kind of ash:
  • Banana Ash - Dry banana skin then put it in a clean, dry saucepan and place this over the heat. Leave it in the saucepan until it burns to ash.
  • Maize Cob Ash - Place the maize cob in the fire and allow it to catch alight. Take it out while still aflame and leave it to burn on a clean metal surface (or in a saucepan). Once it has burned, crush it to ash.
  • Bean Ash - Use the dried remains of any part of the bean plant (the pods or husks are particularly good for this). Put the dried remains in a clean,    dry saucepan and place it over the heat until the contents burn to ash.  As these burn, add more of the dried bean plant until these too burn to ash.

Food and Nutrition Advice

  • Thrush is a sign of a weak immune system; the best way to prevent it is through proper diet and nutrition.
  • Eat raw garlic every day; it has strong anti-fungal and immune-boosting properties.

If you have mouth sores:
  • Eat soft and moist foods, like soup, which are easier to chew and swallow.  You can soften food by mixing it with liquid,  or you can soak hard foods in liquid until they become soft.
  • Avoid spicy, salty, sour or acidic foods.

Follow guidelines to prevent thrush in the General Health and Diet Related Problems section.
  • Eat raw garlic, selenium-rich foods, fresh natural yoghurt (not sweetened or flavoured), yellow vegetables,   cooked  banana and green vegetables (but not acidic ones like spinach and mchicha).
  • Avoid caffeine and nicotine.
  • Avoid sugar (refined sugar, yeast, dairy products, wheat products and alcohol).
  • If you take antibiotics then you should eat unsweetened, natural yoghurt (maziwa mala)  to help friendly bacteria  grow in your digestive system.
