About the Illness

If you do not keep your mouth clean enough then plaque and bacteria build up and stick to the teeth.
This causes gums to become infected (painful, red and swollen).

Common Symptoms

Swollen, red gums that bleed easily; painful gums; bad breath; loose teeth; sensitive teeth; tooth decay.

Children's Issues

Do not allow your child to become used to sweets, soft drinks or food with lots of sugar.
If children are HIV+ or malnourished, it is particularly important to make sure they clean their teeth properly every day.

Important Information

Seek professional help if your gums are sore and bleeding even when you clean your mouth and teeth properly.

Food and Nutrition Advice

  • Eat protective foods rich in vitamins, especially eggs, meat, beans, dark green vegetables and fruits like orange, lemon and tomatoes.
  • When you eat meat, make sure no pieces are left stuck between your teeth.
  • Avoid sweet, sticky and stringy foods that are likely to get stuck in your teeth.
  • Avoid eating too much sugar as this helps the build up of bacteria in the mouth.

Body Work and General Advice

Try and clean your mouth after every meal by brushing your teeth and then gargling. If you can't clean your teeth after every meal you should clean them in the morning when you get up and in the evening before you go to sleep.

Brushing your teeth

  • If possible, use a soft bristle tooth brush to clean your teeth. If this is not available, use twigs.
  • If gums are sensitive then use a soft cloth instead. DO NOT SHARE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH WITH ANYONE.
  • If you have no toothpaste then you can use either charcoal or salt. Dip your toothbrush, fingers or toothbrush stick into the powder, rub your teeth and gums, and then rinse your mouth out with clean water.
  • If you have no toothbrush you can chew any of these twigs to clean your mouth: Neem; Mswaki; Fever tree; Zanthoxylum usambarense, Lantana trifolia, or Toddalia asiatica

Gargles
After you have brushed your teeth, use one of the following gargles to rinse your mouth:
  • Salt Water Gargle Dissolve 1 tbsp salt in 1 glass hot water. Gargle, rinse mouth and spit out.
  • Lemon and Salt Gargle Dissolve 1 tbsp salt and 1 tbsp lemon juice in 1 glass hot water. Gargle, rinse mouth and spit out.
  • Avocado Stone Gargle Dilute 1 tbsp of avocado stone powder in 1 glass hot water, then gargle.
