About the Illness

Genital warts are caused by a virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that is spread through sexual contact. It is considered a sign of likely HIV infection.

Common Symptoms

They look like warts on other parts of the body (hard black growths), but there are often more of them; in men they usually grow on the penis but can also appear on the scrotum or anus; in women they grow on the lips of the vagina or around the anus.

Children's Issues

Genital warts can occur in children who are HIV+, but this is unusual.
